"The Strain" premiered its second season with the usual macabre plot viewers have come to expect with FX's horror drama series. This Sunday, another spooky episode will once again scare the pants off the audience and keep them wide awake at night.

In "By Any Means," TV Guide reports that Ephraim (Corey Stoll) and Nora (Mía Maestro) will perform experiments on their newly acquired patients. Meanwhile, Fet (Kevin Durand) and Dutch (Ruta Gedmintas) will grow closer on a mission to make sure neighborhood buildings are clear and Kelly (Natalie Brown) will begin her search for her son Zach (Max Charles).

The show's premiere episode began with a flashback of Abraham (David Bradley) as a child in 1932, listening to his grandmother tell a story about how the Master got his modern form. Back to the present day, Abraham was hunting the Master into a basement after their attempt to burn him failed.

He was then kidnapped by Vaun (Stephen McHattie), one of the Strigoi, and took him to meet "the Ancients" who made a deal with him. Meanwhile, the Master told Eichorst (Richard Sammel) that it was time for both revenge and succession and demanded that Eichorst "have Bolivar reclaim the loam" and then bring him "the children."

Ephraim, Nora, Fet, Dutch and Zack were holed up in a vampire-proofed warehouse. They then conceived a new strategy — instead of trying to stop the epidemic, they would be creating a new virus to crush it. They also discovered a middle-aged couple who got infected by the vampires. Instead of killing them, Eph decided that they could use them for the new experiment.

In another subplot, viewers were introduced to a school for blind children who ended up in Eichorst's clutches. The episode concluded with Kelly, Ephraim's wife, awakened by the vampire acolyte, leading her to "her new family" — the newly infected children.

In the panel interview at the 2015 San Diego Comic-Con, Stroll hinted that after the first episode, season 2 would take a sinister turn. He also revealed that Eph could be losing "a bit of his humanity" as he delved further into the research, Showbiz Junkies reports.

"He was never a terribly polite or patient person, but now if anybody is going to go actively against his plans he certainly has no time for them. It's a good thing that we've been able to get past that exposition and get into the drama of the interpersonal conflicts," said Stroll.

"The Strain" airs Sunday at 10 p.m. EST on FX.
