'Vampire Diaries' season 7 spoilers: Does future look bleak for 'Steroline?'

Is there hope for Caroline and Stefan? The CW

Stefan and Caroline's fans will be disappointed when the series returns for the second half of "The Vampire Diaries" season 7, when they find out that the friends-turned-love interests are no longer talking to each other.

Movie News Guide reported that the supernatural drama will feature a significant time jump when season 7 returns from a midseason hiatus. But this time, Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Caroline (Candice King) will no longer be together after she told him that she is pregnant with Alaric (Matt Davis) and Jo's (Jodi Lyn O'Keefe) twin babies.

But the mysterious pregnancy will not be the only reason why Stefan will be indifferent to Caroline. According to earlier spoilers, the younger Salvatore brother will start seeing the new character named Valerie (Elizabeth Blackmore) after the three-year time jump.

In a previous interview with Variety, series showrunner Julie Plec talked about the scenario.

"Stefan and Caroline were supposed to be in this beautiful relationship and yet, we saw in the beginning of the season that she refused to speak with him and now he's with Valerie. You have to ask the question: What came first, her fury or his new relationship?" Plec said.

Meanwhile, executive producer Caroline Dries also offered an explanation regarding the falling out of the Steroline couple in a previous talk with TVLine.

"[Episode 9] doesn't really focus on Stefan and Caroline as much as it focuses on Caroline, Alaric and their babies. The babies aren't what ultimately break them up; it will be a confluence of many little things that lead to their demise," Dries said.

Could this mean that Stefan and Caroline will no longer have a chance to be together in the future?

The second half of "The Vampire Diaries" season 7 will premiere in a different time slot, on Friday, Jan. 29, on The CW.
