Damon (Ian Somerhalder) will take a trip down memory lane when he was still a Civil War soldier in the upcoming episode of the hit The CW series "The Vampire Diaries."

In "Hell is Other People," Spoiler TV shows a promo photo wherein the Salvatore hunk is all bloody and sporting a fetching war uniform. His hair looks like a wavy mess and he is left standing by a Civil War-era cannon. The background looks chaotic, with smoke and destruction intermingled with the wounded. The episode is the one teased by Somerhalder back in November of last year, stating that it was his "best episode" yet. He also shared that this would mark the change in the series from being the usual "teen vampire soap opera" to having more serious plotlines.

Co-executive producer Caroline Dries revealed to Entertainment Weekly that the second half of season 7 would kick-off with a concept episode that revolving around Damon. She said that this would be the first time the vampire would be seen in almost every scene, which for Damon shippers, is great news. Dries also shared that the episode would explore the vampire's psyche.

"The episode plunges the audience head first into a not-so-typical Damon mess. It's grueling, frustrating, at times even a little bit hilarious examination of one of our favorite and most deranged characters. Turns out that in the murk of Damon Salvatore's psyche, redemption isn't easy to find," the executive producer teased.

As Damon's past will be relived, it is also expected that the episode will give a glimpse of the year his mother Lily (Annie Wersching) died and the ensuing guilt that he will feel after remembering the incident. It will be interesting to see if the flashbacks will help Damon understand Lily's frame of mind once he is freed from the Phoenix Stone.

"The Vampire Diaries" season 7 will return on Jan. 29 at 8 p.m. EST on The CW.
