'The Walking Dead' season 6 could feature Carl's gruesome injury

AMC

"The Walking Dead" series has its fair share of gore and violence, but it has backed away from some of the more gruesome injuries seen in the comic books. However, according to a report from Entertainment Weekly, it is possible that season 6 will include one major character injury involving Carl Grimes (Chandler Riggs).

[Spoiler Warning] In "The Walking Dead" comic books, Carl is accidentally shot in the head by Douglas Monroe, losing his eye in the process. This occurs during a zombie invasion within the walls of the Alexandria Safe-Zone. He is able to recover, although he permanently loses his eye and a portion of his face.

Douglas has been replaced by the character Deanna, played by Tovah Feldshuh.

"We don't know if anybody's losing their eye," showrunner Scott M. Gimple told EW. "There are some things we can't do that were in the comic. Rick losing his hand - there's also another big TV show that did it recently."

This "other show" Gimple refers to could be "Game of Thrones," which saw Jaime Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) lose his hand during season 3. ABC and Marvel Studio's "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." also did something similar when Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg) notably lost his hand during the season 2 finale.

"There is a balance to be struck," he continued to explain. "If it is stuff that's really important to serve the character, we need to try and do it. It's also just if we can pull it off on a consistent basis in a great way. There's stuff we can do, there's stuff we can't do. I would never tell you what it is."

Rick Grimes did lose his hand early on in the comic books, but the TV adaption kept away from that plot point, most likely due to the difficulty this would have brought to the production team to constantly portray Rick without a hand. It is important to note that they were capable of portraying Hershel Greene (Scott Wilson) consistently even when the character lost his foot.

"The Walking Dead" season 6 premieres this Oct. 11.
