Every fan would agree that the midseason finale of "The Walking Dead" season 6 was nothing short of explosive and fantastic. True to the show's tradition, the final episode for the year saw a character left for dead, hordes of hungry walkers and the promise of greater danger.

[Spoiler Alert!] For the first time on the show, the name of the ruthless, sinister individual was dropped. The series finally cast the shadow of Negan, the horrifying but fan-favorite villain from the comic books by Robert Kirkman, on a terrorized and ruined community.

The episode guaranteed that the return of "The Walking Dead" season 6 next year will be crazy, intense and definitely something to look forward to and showrunner Scott Gimple couldn't agree more during an interview with Deadline.

"It's taking us to a closed-quarters situation that is both emotionally explosive and terrifying in as much as people are closed in with an army of walkers. It's a horrific and unique type of claustrophobia," Gimple explained, careful not to give away anything.

The showrunner also talked about how loyal "The Walking Dead" season 6 is to its source material from Carl's eye injury to Glenn's death in the hands of Negan. Gimple explained that the midseason finale last season pretty much "closed the stories" but they have something else in mind for this season.

"We wanted to do something different this year; we wanted to play with that general expectation and that it's not always going to be the same thing as the comic or previous seasons," Gimple said.

He added that they are shying away from fans being able to predict what will happen based on the comics. With Negan close to showing himself, Gimple said that the show will see the villain the way he was in the source material but also different for the element of unpredictability.

"The Walking Dead" season 6 returns on Feb. 14 with an episode titled "No Way Out."
