'The Walking Dead' season 5 spoilers: Will Rick Grimes succumb to the dark side?

The American post-apocalyptic horror drama television series airing on AMC is full of surprises. After Beth Greene (Emily Kinney) succumbed to a shot to the death, the survivors seem to have lost some of their resolve to overcome the odds, including the undead scourge as well as each other. The new promo for "The Walking Dead" season 5 suggests that the group is going to have an even more arduous journey than what it has endured before.

This is because in addition to holding back the zombie infestation, who are as tenacious as ever, the absence of a roof over their heads will add to that encumbrance. The only shelter that they could seek and fortify was the church of Father Gabriel's. Unfortunately, even that monument has already burned to ashes.

Maggie Greene (Lauren Cohan) is suspected to be the first of the group to make a transition to the dark side, after losing the two most important people in her life: her father Herschel Greene (Scott Wilson) and half-sister Beth. The circumstances in which both individuals lost their lives (both deaths were at the hands of power-hungry people) is sufficient evidence and motivation for Maggie's transition.

In the latest promo poster released by AMC, Maggie can be seen holding a very aggressive position, which is far different than her previous stances. According to Showrunner Scott M. Gimple, under immense pressure and in a post-apocalyptic environment, survivors will have the tendency to either show their best or their worst sides. Gimple further suggested to fans to keep an eye out for a darker Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) when the show resumes in February.

According to Gimple, as he explains to the Hollywood Reporter, "Rick will be darker, but it's all to keep his family safe and his people safe."

"The Walking Dead" season 5 will resume on Sunday, Feb. 9.
