'The Walking Dead' season 7 news: Jeffrey Dean Morgan teases how Negan's backstory will be explored

"The Walking Dead" season 6 ended with the introduction of Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), but in the original comic books, Negan's origins are just being introduced. According to the Hollywood Reporter, series creator Robert Kirkman has given fans a short teaser showing Negan building his infamous weapon, the baseball bat Lucille.

This origin story will focus on Negan during the early days of the zombie outbreak, how he became a vicious killer and how he formed the Saviors. However, it is unclear if this origin will be revealed in season 7 of the show. According to actor Jeffrey Dean Morgan, in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, there is a chance but it has yet to be confirmed by the studios and by Kirkman.

"I talked to Robert Kirkman on Sunday night after we did 'Talking Dead' and he is kind of doing the backstory of Negan now, so whether or not or when we see that -- I hope we do, I can't answer that," he explained, hinting that there is a slight possibility of season 7 exploring the origins of Negan, particularly now that comic book fans will learn of his story beforehand.

However, this might require the show to feature an episode focusing entirely on a flashback, similar to how it revealed the Governor's (David Morissey) and Morgan's (Lennie James) backstory. Morgan confirmed that season 7 is going to kick off right where season 6 ended so if a flashback episode were to take place, it wouldn't be at the beginning of season 7.

The origin comic book, titled "Here's Negan," will be 48 pages long and will be published via Image Plus, a new monthly magazine released by the publishers of "The Walking Dead" graphic novel. Four pages per issue will be released until all 48 pages have been published in the span of a year.

"The Walking Dead" season 7 will premiere this October.
