Fans continue to play the waiting game with author George R.R. Martin for the release of "The Winds of Winter." Not too long ago, the novelist behind the bestselling "A Song of Ice and Fire" series dropped the bomb that the HBO adaptation "Game of Thrones" has outpaced him.

On his blog, Martin announced that "the book's not done" and that there's still a long way to go before he gets to the finish line. While "there's a lot written," the beloved author stated that he is still "months away" from completing the book.

"Game of Thrones" season 6 was supposed to be, for the most part, based on "The Winds of Winter." But with the book still being put together, it looks like the series will be the one doing the spoiling this time.

"I can't think of any other instance where the movie or TV show came out as the source material was still being written," Martin wrote, calling the case of his book and its hit small screen adaptation "unique."

The writer said that "Game of Thrones" season 6 may or may not spoil the books. "Some of the 'spoilers' you may encounter in season six may not be spoilers at all... because the show and the books have diverged, and will continue to do so," the novelist wrote.

Martin did not provide a timeframe as to when "The Winds of Winter" will finally hit the shelves. He simply promised that he will do everything he can to make sure it is as good as it can be and that it is worth the long wait.

"Game of Thrones" season 6 will premiere in April. "The Winds of Winter" is yet to see the light of day at that time, which means that whenever the series leaves a plotline hanging, there won't be a book to turn to.

The sixth volume from the "A Song of Ice and Fire" series is expected to be published sometime in 2017.
