'Tokyo Ghoul' season 3 release date rumor: Upcoming season to offer a different story?

Tokyo Ghoul - Ken Kaneki Studio Pierrot

Fans who are waiting for the new season of "Tokyo Ghoul" to unfold could get disappointed if the new rumors surrounding the new season prove correct. Reportedly, the upcoming show will tell a different story.

Crossmap already mentioned that a new season of "Tokyo Ghoul" will indeed premiere this year, though a release period is still uncertain. The confirmation reportedly came from FUNimation CEO and president Gen Fukunaga himself.

However, what the new season is all about is still up in the air, and the report of it being released in the winter turned out to be hoax.

According to Korea Portal, the first indication that a season 3 continuation is unclear is the report that "Tokyo Ghoul" season 3 will premiere in winter. Allegedly, this report is false. The winter release period propagated first by Anime Maru, and picked up by different sites, turned out to be a satirical piece.

The industry follower quoted Anime Maru as stating, "Nothing on this site should be interpreted as factual nor as a claim to fact... In conclusion, Anime Maru is fake anime news."

Meanwhile, there are also speculations that instead of a season 3 continuation, the next episodes of "Tokyo Ghoul" will take its plots from the manga adaptation, "Tokyo Ghoul:re." According to MNR Daily, while the season 2 and season 3 events may be bridged on the new show, the original manga adaptation only has 52 chapters. Should the events stretch from the "Tokyo Ghoul:re" manga, it will be new territory for the season 3 creators.

Youth Health Mag added that rumors also place the next "Tokyo Ghoul" anime adaptation to shift its focus, which means that instead of ending the story of Ken Kaneki in season 2, season 3 will have a new protagonist. Reportedly, season 3 will focus on Touka Kirishima, a ghoul ex-waitress at Anteiku.
