'Tom Clancy's The Division' microtransactions and DLC explained

During a recent press preview for the upcoming video game "Tom Clancy's The Division," creative director Magnus Jansen explained whether or not the title would feature in-game microtransactions and paid DLC. According to a report from Eurogamer, the answers given by Jansen are vague at best.

When asked if the game would support either microtransactions or regular DLC packs, Jansen confirmed the latter while denying the former. He further explained that there would be no means of paying or buying something in the game in order to win or gain advantages, a microtransaction scheme seen in many video games today.

Jansen then stated that the DLC packs planned will be paid for by consumers but according to his personal definitions of the word "microtransactions," they will not exist in the game. However, the report points out that the issue concerning microtransactions becomes quite muddled.

Ubisoft later clarified Jansen's statements when they released an official comment on the matter. "Magnus's statement is correct, there will be no microtransactions at all. Not even for vanity items. Vanity items will be sold as DLC, through the regular first-party stores.​"

As pointed out in the report, this indicates that the game will have some form of microtransaction despite the company outright denying that it would. Vanity items are said to be released as paid DLC so it is likely they will be sold as whole packs instead of individual items bought directly in the game.

While "Tom Clancy's The Division" will not have microtransactions that will make the game easier to play, it will not be the first game to offer vanity items for sale. Titles such as "Destiny" have allowed players to buy costumes, emotes, and other items that makes their experiences in the game unique without giving them an advantage over other players.

"Tom Clancy's The Division" releases this March 8 for the PS4, Xbox One and PC.
