The upcoming "Tomb Raider" movie is going to be a reboot, and it will not be tied to the previous two films that starred Angelina Jolie. The movie is now going to star Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft, and producer Graham King has given a few more details revealing the plot and direction that the movie is going for.

Speaking to Hey U Guys, King stated that this would be a "back to the roots" kind of story, further cementing the idea that this film is based primarily on the rebooted video games. The 2013 "Tomb Raider" game and its sequel, "Rise of the Tomb Raider," focused on a younger Lara Croft who was still learning to become an archeologist, adventurer, and survivalist.

"This is a young Lara Croft in search to see if her father is dead or alive, so it has a very emotional part to it and I think that's what Alicia Vikander found so interesting about it," King explained. "I think the storytelling is really good and I think we've got the right crew and a great director and I think it's going to be really fun making a film like this," he went on to say.

However, while the movie is using the newer games as its template, it is also deviating a little bit from the said source material. In the reboot games, Lara Croft's father is also an archeologist and adventurer, but he had already passed away by the time the events in the games took place. This detail has been changed for the upcoming film.

As reported by Cinema Blend, it indicates that the games and film will not be directly connected to each other. This will be in contrast to the approach of the "Assassin's Creed" movie, which is also set in the same universe as the video games.

The report further speculates that the senior Croft may have gone missing during an expedition, and now, Lara will start her own journey to find him, very similar to "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade."

"Tomb Raider" will premiere in theaters on March 16, 2018.
