'Tony Hawk 5' release date: sequel game development confirmed

The fourth installment in the "Tony Hawk" game franchise came out in 2002 and since then, fans have been patiently waiting for a sequel. Their patience may be rewarded soon.

Recently, a leaked image showing what could be a new logo for the fifth installment of the skating game popped up online when a caterer for a "Tony Hawk"-themed event posted a photo on Instagram. In the image, Chef Joe Youkhan was seen posing against a skating rink background on which a projected "Tony Hawk 5" image was clearly shown. The image has been taken down, but not before game observers shared the photo online.

When reached for comment, game publisher Activision sought out notable game site Polygon, saying, "'Tony Hawk 5' is a working title, and not the final title."

Fan site Attack of the Fanboy said that Activision confirmed the development, with a statement that says: "It's no secret there is a new Tony Hawk game coming, Tony announced it on Twitter months ago. 'Tony Hawk 5′ is a working title, not the final one. Look for detailed info on this game soon."

The new image and comments from the publisher further confirm the upcoming skating game. Late last year, it was reported that Activision is already firming up plans for a 2015 release of a "Tony Hawk" title, although it was still unconfirmed if it would be a sequel, or a spinoff like the "Tony Hawk RIDE" title.

Skater Tony Hawk himself confirmed the development, saying, "I'm currently working with Activision on a console game for 2015 (along with a new mobile game). I think fans of [the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater] series will be hyped."

He reiterated the same confirmation at this year's International CES, and even said that the new game would definitely be for the Playstation 4.
