Most role-playing games in the market creates a backstory for the characters in order for players to grow attached to the protagonist. "Torment: Tides of Numenera," on the other hand, allows the player to channel himself onto the character and gives a variety of options to choose from on how he identifies.

The latest trailer introduces the Nano, which one could identify as the mage class of the game. The clip explains, though, that the nano actually uses ancient technology, contrary to magic, but is indecipherable to the untrained mind. Choosing this class increases the base intellect of the player's character.

A nano's advantage in the gameplay is that he possesses knowledge that no other class has. By using such wisdom, a nano is able to communicate more cautiously and passively read the minds of the non-playable characters. When faced with combat, the nano can hold his ground by engaging in long-range battle using esoteries and conjuring creatures to do his bidding.

The disadvantage of choosing this class, however, will potentially be the lack of defensive abilities, PC Gamer assumes. Its reliance on long-range techniques and summoned beings leave him open for attacks, especially when faced with fast and aggressive opponents. The only way to survive a brawl is to make a safe distance from the battlefield, or else it could spell disaster.

This is where strategy and preference would come in. The nano specializes on knowledge, while the glaive prefers brawn, and the jack has a bit of both. It will be up to the player to decide which fighting style he would prefer, also considering the fact that "Torment: Tides of Numenera" is a game that revolves around interactions. For those who prefer to take things in stride, the nano may be the class of choice.

"Torment: Tides of Numenera" can be played on Steam, PS4, and Xbox One platforms, and it is set to be released in early 2017.
