Just a few hours after Michael Bay finished filming "Transformers: Age of Extinction," the director was immediately asked what is next for the franchise, which he replied with "there's a lot that's unexplored, but that's for the next director to figure out" half-jokingly."

The blockbuster director also added "they're hard movies to do and it takes every day for two years. They're fun, but they're hard," hinting that there is a possibility that the project will be handed to a new director in the future.

In a published interview with USA Today, the article mentioned that Bay considers passing the responsibilities for the succeeding Transformers films to another director while he sets his focus on something new.

"There's kind of a new chapter, a new direction in movies I want to make," the director stated. "I have a lot of stories to tell. And it's about flexing new muscles."

In an earlier interview, Bay mentioned that he wants to pursue a passion project, which is a documentary film about illegal elephant poaching.

If Bay's plan of handing over Transformers to a new director pushes through, it will not come out as a complete surprise. He actually did something like this in the past, like passing over the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film to Jonathan Liebesman, considered as one of his protégés.

Bay's "Transformers: Age of Extinction" is considered to be the highest grossing film worldwide for this year so far, and it is expected to remain so for the rest of 2014. It is also recognized as the 9^th highest grossing film of all time all over the world. In the US alone, it is the third highest grossing film of the year.

Bay was known to have successfully won over the blockbuster filmmaking genre, so it is not surprising if he wants to venture into another area in making movies.
