Confirmed details have yet to be revealed about the next season of "True Detective" as season 3 is still up in the air. However, speculations suggest that the series will definitely continue and may even premiere sometime next year.

According to MovieNewsGuide, fans who are asking for season 3 of "True Detective" are now convinced that the show will continue. Reportedly, an Instagram post by Olivia Munn shows the actress posing together with Jillian Bell, Jason Bateman, and Abby Lee. The image has the caption "True Detective Season 3 #officexmasparty" tag.

The rumors that the show will not be continuing with a third season started with the series list by HBO. While some of its contemporaries already have their airing dates scheduled, "True Detective" remains a "complete series," with additional seasons being described as "TBD." This is despite news that HBO has apparently confirmed that the show will continue on until 2018.

In addition, a third season is reportedly uncertain due to the lukewarm reception that season 2 got. In an earlier report by The Frame, HBO's president of programming Michael Lombardo admitted that the lackluster performance of "True Detective" season 2 may be partly due to his actions. Reportedly, Lombardo pushed show writer Nic Pizzolatto to hurry up with his work. The HBO executive said, "I set him up. To deliver, in a very short time frame, something that became very challenging to deliver. That's not what that show is. He had to reinvent the wheel, so to speak. Find his muse."

However, although not pertaining to a possible season 3, Lombardo finished his statement by saying, "And so I think that's what I learned from it. Don't do that anymore."

Meanwhile, since the show is reportedly staying as an HBO series until 2018, it can be expected that season 3 may likely premiere sometime next year.
