"The Vampire Diaries" star Ian Somerhalder couldn't be happier about married life as he talked about his wife, Nikki Reed. The 36-year-old actor proudly talked about Reed at the debut of the "We All Love Wildlife" video series at the International Bird Rescue in San Pedro California on Thursday, July 9. He said that the "Twilight" actress' compassion for animals is "second to none." 

"I mean she changes her house into a rescue and foster home for so many animals and has taken so much time and energy and money of her own with her family, particularly her mom, to foster animals and make sure that they are safe," said The CW star about his wife. 

He added that her passion for a cause that is close to his heart is something that makes their union stronger and "is an amazing thing to wake up to every morning." 

The pair has a long-term plan to make their charity work a permanent part of their lives together. He said that their goal is to build four profit entities that will sustain their non-profit initiatives "til the end of time." 

While helping some of the workers release a few birds into the wild, the actor joked, "This bird better not steal my new wedding ring! I actually haven't taken mine off since April!" 

Following his appearance at the International Bird Rescue, Somerhalder greeted fans at the Comic-Con on Saturday, July 11, as he joined the rest of the cast of "The Vampire Diaries" as a panelist. He was accompanied by Reed at the event, and the two held hands as they made their way inside the convention center. 

The couple tied the knot on April 26 at a private ceremony in Malibu after nine months of dating. Along with acting for film and TV, Somerhalder and Reed are devoted to helping and fostering animals in need.
