The entire "The Vampire Diaries" fandom is grieving as actress Nina Dobrev announced that she will be leaving the show after the current season.

Dobrev herself announced on Monday her departure from the show through an Instagram post. She posted a photo of herself and series creator Julie Plec, which comes with a lengthy explanation why she and her closest friends from the show spent a fun Easter weekend on Lake Lanier, Georgia. Aside from the fact that they were celebrating the holidays, the cast and crew of the show also held a goodbye party for the female lead of "TVD."

"I want to share this goodbye with all of you (this weekend's pictures were just the beginning). You, the wonderful fandom who gave more love, support and passion than anyone could have ever imagined seven years ago, when a young Degrassi girl from Canada showed up in LA to audition for 'that Twilight TV show,'" the actress said.

Prior to her announcement, MTV had a chat with Dobrev during the 2015 SXSW Film Festival last month. The actress shared that she wants to be known for doing other things besides playing Elena Gilbert in the show.

"I do want to direct at some point," Dobrev shared with MTV News. "I want to produce — I'm going to take over the world eventually. But I feel like if I do that, I want to do it in a different platform, separate [from 'The Vampire Diaries'] ... If I decide to take that path, I think I'd do it in a different way."

But most fans are not happy with Dobrev's decision to leave the show. Many of them expressed their despair in their Twitter accounts, saying that they cried a lot because of the announcement, while others threaten to boycott the show now that the main actress will not return for the future seasons.

Aside from fans, Dobrev's co-star and former boyfriend Ian Somerhalder was also reportedly devastated with the announcement. A source told the Hollywood Life that the actor who portrays Elena's on-and-off boyfriend Damon Salvatore tried to beg her to stay for at least another season, but the actress already made up her mind.

Dobrev's stint in "The Vampire Diaries" will last until the season 6 finale in May.
