'Vampire Diaries' season 7 plot rumors: Damon and Stefan's brotherhood prevails

With Elena gone, "The Vampire Diaries" season 7 zeroes back in on the Salvatore brothers, who may or may not always be fighting on the same side in the new season. In an interview with Collider, executive producer Caroline Dries revealed where the duo will be when the show returns this fall.

"Damon needs to go and unwind after losing Elena, in the only way Damon can, but he and Stefan are in a good place," she explained. "But Stefan will make a decision in the premiere that Damon is not cool with, so that will instantly pit them against each other."

The EP did not give a clue what will instigate bad blood or what it will take for the brothers to be at odds early in season 7. All the same, she assured fans that after everything – the clashes, the victories and the pain – their brotherhood will always prevail and keep them together.

"A lot of the season will be about them working together or working directly against each other. At the end of the day, it's their brother bond that's going to win out. But every episode is really about what they want, and sometimes that's the same and other times they have polar opposite wants," she stated.

Just like normal brothers, Stefan and Damon do not agree with each other all the time, especially now that the latter is going back to his "volatile" self and the former is touted to be this season's hero. Their mom Lily and her powerful posse, the baddies for this season, should at least unite them in trying to achieve one goal.

As Damon fights for Mystic Falls' safety while moving on from losing Elena, he will have Bonnie by his side. Dries said that Damon, at some point in the premiere, will not be happy that Elena isn't with him, while Bonnie is. The executive producer however, assured viewers that it will not take long for this to be ironed out.

"The Vampire Diaries" season 7 premieres Oct. 8.
