This year's show did not feature a host and opened with a number from Lady Gaga, who performed her single "Applause" from her upcoming album "Artpop" in a comeback performance.
Miley Cyrus and Robin Thicke also collaborated in a performance of his hit song "Blurred Lines." Cyrus' risqué performance has sparked outrage and much criticism, as it was deemed too sexually provocative.
The 20-year-old wore nude pvc underwear her routine, in which she danced suggestively with singer Robin Thicke.
Justin Timberlake also gave one of the greatest performances of the night, as he performed a medley of his hit songs. Afterwards, he was joined onstage by former NSYNC bandmembers Lance Bass, JC Chasez and Chris Kirkpatrick. They performed for a one-time only performance in Timberlake's honor before he was presented with the prestigious Michael Jackson Vanguard Award by talk show host Jimmy Fallon. The band had not performed together in over a decade after they last performed at the 2003 Grammy Awards.
Katy Perry, who has not performed at the MTV VMA's since 2009, performed under the Brooklyn Bridge with her first single "Roar" from her upcoming album "Prism", which will be released Oct. 22.
Justin Timberlake won the Video of the Year award for his single "Mirrors."
