"Voltron: Legendary Defender" season 1 proved to be a surprise hit for Netflix, and because of this, a second season was immediately green-lit. At the New York Comic-Con held last weekend, the producers of the show shared some pieces of information regarding season 2 and announced that the show would premiere in January next year.

"The funny thing with animation is that in order for it to be done by a certain time, it's got to start forever ago. So we've known about season 2 for a long time, and it was pretty much done before season 1 ever came out," explained producer Lauren Montgomery (via Screen Rant).

She also stated that they were never given a high budget to begin with nor did they ever get the support until the first season came out and proved to be a success. It was only then that the second season, which they were already working on, was given the chance to continue progress.

Co-producer Joaquim Dos Santos also explained that, for them, both seasons 1 and 2 felt like "one giant season" that told one big, cohesive story. He further stated that, in terms of production, they simply made one long season that just had to be cut in half.

During the panel story editor, Tim Hedrick also explained that they always wanted to end season 1 with a climactic battle and then leave viewers with a cliffhanger to make them want more. While season 1 dealt with introducing this new version of "Voltron," he did confirm that season 2 would feature a more expansive story.

Hedrick stated that in season 2 there would be a few more stand-alone adventures and that more locations in the galaxy would be visited. He also said that the second season would dive deeper into the mythology established in season 1, such as the truth about Shiro, the origins of Voltron, and the story behind the villain.

"Voltron" season 2 is scheduled to premiere on Jan. 20, 2017.
