This year's season 4 finale of The Walking Dead ended in a cliffhanger, leaving viewers to wonder what happened to Beth, who had been missing from the series since episode 13.

Actress Emily Kinney, who plays Beth, recently said in an interview that her character is indeed somewhere and that she will be back, but viewers would have to come up with their own conclusions to find out what happened in the meantime.

The Walking Dead staff writers are currently busy scripting the fifth season of the AMC hit .

Kinney recently posted a photo of herself, showrunner Scott Gimple and four staff writers to Instagram with the caption: "Stopped by #TWD writers room today."

Fans have been curious about the fate of Hershel's youngest daughter, but creator Robert Kirkman assured fans that Beth is not dead. He told TV Guide: "I've seen that a lot on Twitter. When a theory is as prevalent as that one is, it's more than likely not true. If there ever was a story line where we were going a different way and the audience seemed to be ahead of us to that point, it would be extremely unfortunate and I would not feel too good about how well we're doing our jobs. Thankfully this doesn't seem to be the case."

The Walking Dead season 4 finale aired last month drawing in a massive 15.7 million viewers to AMC.

The finale episode saw survivors Rick Grimes, Carl, Michonne and Daryl arriving safely at Terminus. Rick's group was reunited with Glenn, Maggie, Sasha and Bob but fans don't know what happened to Beth, Carol and Tyreese were not

Kirkman hinted at what is to come in Walking Dead season 5. "Who the people of Terminus are and what their deal is will be dealt with fairly quickly when we come back for season five," Kirkman told TVLine.

Regarding the whereabouts of Beth, Carol and Tyreese, he said: "We'll deal with [their whereabouts] fairly quickly [in the next series].. We kind of felt like we needed more unknowns to keep people guessing. Leaving the fate of Beth and Carol and Tyreese and Judith completely ambiguous... gives us that."

The next season is expected to be different from the past four seasons of the show.

The Hollywood Reporter states that Alanna Masterson (Tara), Christian Serratos (Rosita) and Andrew J. West (Gareth), have been promoted as cast regulars for the fifth season of the show. Kirkman told THR: "Seeing Gareth and Rick and the people of Terminus and our survivors go head-to-head is going to be interesting. There is a very deep, dark and storied history to Terminus and how these people came to be that will be revealed in season five."

The first half of Walking Dead season 5 will be returning to AMC in October 2014.
