Jodi Arias' trial will continue on Thursday with the jury set to recommence their deliberations after they were unable to come to a unanimous verdict on Wednesday about whether the convicted killer should be given the death penalty or not.

The jury was in a deadlock on Wednesday, and after about two and a half hours of deliberations they reported to the judge that they were at an impasse. However, Judge Sherry Stephens told them to continue on, and try to identify areas where they all agreed and where they disagreed. He urged them to keep trying, knowing that if they were unable to get beyond their impasse a mistrial could be announced in the penalty phase of the sentencing, meaning a new jury would have to be drafted in.
After those instructions from the judge, the jury continued their deliberations until late afternoon, but ended adjourning for the day without being able to reach a decision.
Under Arizona law, a hung jury in the death penalty phase of a trial requires a new jury to be brought in to decide the punishment.
If that happens but the second jury also is unable to reach a unanimous decision, the judge would then sentence Arias to life in prison, or to be eligible for release after 25 years.
Former Maricopa County Attorney Rick Romley has told The Associated Press: "If that happens, this jury would be dismissed and a second jury would be impaneled, and you'd literally have to go through the whole case again."
It is also reportedly possible that if the current jury does not reach a unanimous agreement then the prosecutor could agree to take the death penalty threat away. That would lead the judge to decide whether Arias should be given a life sentence or whether she would be eligible for release after 25 years. The judge cannot by herself sentence Arias to the death penalty, and only the jury can unanimously agree to that.
