After months of speculation, Fox has officially renewed "Wayward Pines" for a second season. The official announcement has since been posted on the Fox website, and while details of the plot are sparse, it does state that season 2 will air sometime in Summer 2016.

"Season 2 is going to take the suspense, the vision of the future and the haunting character drama to whole new levels, and we can't wait for our fans to continue that ride next year," stated Fox President David Madden. 

Also revealed in the announcement is the basic premise of the second season. According to the post, the season will put the spotlight on an entirely new character who has just arrived in the town of Wayward Pines right in the middle of a rebellion.

Season 1 ended with several teenagers overtaking the town and putting most of the adults back into cryostasis. Main character Ethan Burke (Matt Dillon) sacrificed his life so it is likely his son, Ben (Charlie Tahan), will be the leader of the rebellion.

The new character is speculated to either be a teenager who wakes up from cryostasis for the very first time and this will be their first time learning that it is now thousands of years in the future, a time where most of humanity is extinct, or it could be a character coming from outside Wayward Pines, perhaps from a community of survivors.

Given that season 1 adapted all three books by Blake Crouch, season 2 will be an entirely new story cooked up by Crouch and director-writer M. Night Shyamalan, involving new characters and events.

As stated by Cinema Blend, season 1 of "Wayward Pines" went on to be the number one scripted summer show for 2015 for the 18-49 age demographic and is widely viewed as a massive comeback story for M. Night Shyamalan. 

No official release date has yet been announced except that it will release in summer next year.
