"Wayward Pines" was a welcome return to form for filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan. The series ended on a cliffhanger, leading many to hope for a season 2. As previously reported, Shyamalan has been discussing a possible story line with book author Blake Crouch, although the likelihood of this becoming a reality may have just been shot down.

According to a report from Youth Health Magazine, "Wayward Pines" executive producer Chad Hodge explained that the whole story was told in the first season and that it would be "impossible" to continue forward despite the open-ended nature of the finale.

The report points out that "Wayward Pines" was designed as a mini-series and not as a typical televsion show that would continue indefinitely. The series, based on Crouch's trilogy of books, covered all of the events of the books they are based on albeit with an altered ending.

With no book for a second season to base on, Shyamalan and Crouch would have to write an entirely new story for the show to follow. The books ended with Ethan Burke (played by Matt Dillon on the show) waking up in the far future but the series ended with Burke sacrificing himself and the town being overtaken by the kids of the First Generation.

If the series would move forward, it is speculated that Burke's son would become the central character. However, there are also speculations of the series focusing on Adam Hassler (Tim Griffin), who led an expedition out of Wayward Pines to discover what remained of humanity.

Despite Hodge's statement, Fox Entertainment Group CEO Dana Walden stated that there may be hope for a second mini-series to continue "Wayward Pines" but it would depend on Blake Crouch to lay the groundwork with a new set of novels to adapt.

"Wayward Pines" season 2 may happen but it could take some time as it appears Fox executives are waiting for Shyamalan to work on the story and Crouch to publish the novels before moving ahead.
