A spine-chilling new key art for "Wayward Pines" season 2 has been released by FOX, teasing that things can, without a doubt, get creepier in the crazy little town of Wayward Pines.

The teaser image shows a hand of a baby, clenching the finger of a large, talon-like hand that can easily be that of an Abbie, the name of the flesh-eating mutant humans that linger outside the walls of Wayward Pines.

The key art asks the question: "Who shall inherit the earth?" hinting that in "Wayward Pines" season 2, the civilization (or what's left of it) could be fighting a losing battle against the Abbies for the custody of the place they once called home.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the key art teases that either the members of the First Generation are beginning to thrive or the Abbies are increasing in number and will one day dominate the earth and eliminate the human race.

"Wayward Pines" season 2 continues the story told last year in the perspective of Ethan Burke (Matt Dillon), who died trying to get his family and the rest of the citizens of Wayward Pines away from the Abbies and into safety.

Fans can expect to learn more about the creatures lurking outside the walls of the town in the new season. "We've only scratched the surface of what the real enemy is outside the fence," showrunner Mark Friedman told Entertainment Weekly.

"Wayward Pines" season 2 will see the return of familiar faces like Kate (Carla Gugino), Sheriff Pope (Terrence Howard), Theresa (Shannyn Sossamon), Ben (Charlie Tahan), David Pilcher (Toby Jones), Nurse Pam (Melissa Leo) and Adam Hassler (Tim Griffin).

The new season will introduce a new protagonist in the person of Dr. Theo Yedlin played by Jason Patric, the latest Wayward Pines resident who finds himself in the middle of a rebellion.

Djimon Hounsou joins the cast to play the role of the town historian, who knows an awful lot about Wayward Pines, including how it came to be. M. Night Shyamalan will be back as producer.

"Wayward Pines" season 2 premieres May 25 on FOX.
