What does a family restored in Jesus look like?

We have to admit that today, the image of family has been distorted and that many families have been ruined by the brokenness of this world. But our God is on a mission to redeem the household through the power of Jesus Christ.

The family is the universal basic unit of society. So much of our understanding of an individual is based on the household that they live in, and that is so because that is how God designed mankind to be - to exist in a safe and nurturing environment in the context of familial relationships. God wants everyone to be part of a home and grow in a home rooted on the foundation of Christ.

Sadly, many homes today are broken, children are homeless, wives have been hurt by their husbands and husbands have been abandoned by their wives. The sins of this world- sexual immorality, greed, ignorance, pride, bitterness and others- have ruined the household. But Our Heavenly Father works to redeem the broken home and the broken individual.

Psalm 68:5 declares, "Father of the fatherless and protector of widows is God in his holy habitation."

God is very much concerned about families today and He wants to make every household whole. Why? Because God values relationships, especially familial relationships.

That's why Peter declared through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit in Acts 16:31, "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household."

God wants to save not just individuals, but households. He longs to save households from the hurt of separation, disunity and brokenness. God works to protect family ties.

That's also why God gives us commands to protect the home. Colossians 3:18-20 commands us "Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. Husbands, love your wives, and do not be harsh with them. Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord."

God wants whole homes that are submitted to Him.

What does it take to restore the home? No less than the perfect work of Jesus Christ. It's hard to trust in governments, organisations or even in individual fathers and mothers to make households whole, but God has made a way for our homes to be whole. Jesus is the foundation upon which homes are built and when we have Him as the basis of the home, we are set on solid ground.

God values family more than you think, and He values your family. If you are part of a broken home, know that in Christ, you can belong to a family both here on this earth and a family in heaven because God calls us into His family too. Titus 3:6-7 declares that in Jesus, we are "justified by his grace" and now "heirs according to the hope of eternal life."
