What is the purpose of marriage according to the Bible?

There is a reason, or reasons rather, why God fully supports the covenant of marriage. This is also a reason why God doesn't want marriages to be dissolved. As Christians, we must know what the true purpose of marriage is so that when you get married or already married, you can focus on achieving such goals. Here is the purpose of marriage.

1. Be A Reflection

Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground. So, God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them." Genesis 1:26-27

One of the most important verses in the Bible pertaining to a man and a woman is found in the Book of Genesis. The verse explains that God created male and female in His own image. Individually, we are to reflect God's image in whatever we do, more so when you are married. The devil will do what he can do break up your marriage and cause disunity; you must not allow it. The way you must act towards your spouse should reflect how God treats everyone. This will prepare you to be righteous Christian parents.

2. Raise Children

Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it." Genesis 1:28

The next purpose of marriage is to raise a family. God wants us to be fruitful, but He wants us to raise God-like children also. He wants us to increase in number so that there will be more God-like people in the world.

In the first purpose, God wants you to act like how He would act. This is because you will teach these principles to your children as well. Words will mean nothing to your children if they don't see you follow through with your actions. Truth is, most kids learn through seeing too. So if you exemplify love, peace, joy, kindness, patience, gentleness, and self-control, you and your spouse will have the ability to raise God-fearing children, too.

3. Two is Better Than One

Apart from raising a Christ-centered family, God wants your family to be united at all times. This enables your family to reign over evil. When married couples work together in unity, the devil can be defeated no matter how hard he tries to cause disunity within your family. And the easier it will be to fight evil if God is at the center of your family. Further, with oneness, it fosters encouragement, support, and cooperation within the family.

Marriage is a beautiful thing. The love felt between couples is more powerful than you think, and God knows this from the beginning. If you're about to get married or are already married, keep your purpose in mind and do your best to achieve these goals. Work together. Prioritize unity in your family and don't forget to always put Christ at the center of everything you do.
