Why Speaking in Tongues Is Not a Dead Practice

 Stocksnap.io

Speaking in tongues is a practice that has been deemed dead by some quarters in the Christian community. While I have nothing against brothers and sisters of Cessationist faith, I do want to make a compelling case that will hopefully make us realise that the gift of tongues is not just alive today but even available to all as well.

The first time the gift of tongues appeared was on the day of Pentecost when the first followers of Jesus experienced the baptism of the Holy Spirit. It was a sign of power and a means by which people would intercede.

The most compelling proof that the gift of tongues is a power people can tap into today is the function that it still serves. We know that God is a God of function and allows things that serve a purpose to live on. Well, the gift of tongues serves many purposes for both the people of God before and even in the present.

Here are just four of the many ways that speaking in tongues proves to be beneficial for us.

1. Boldness to Preach the Gospel

The day of Pentecost was also the first time open-air preaching leading to multiple conversions happened. Being emboldened by the in-filling of the Spirit, Peter stepped out to boldly proclaim the Christ that he—only a few weeks back—had openly denied. That power of the Holy Spirit manifested by the speaking of tongues is a power that we can still tap into today as we preach the gospel to others.

2. Powerful Intercession

Have you ever experienced a time where you just didn't know what to pray for? 1 Corinthians 14:2 says, "For one who speaks in a tongue speaks not to men but to God; for no one understands him, but he utters mysteries in the Spirit."

When we don't know what to say the Holy Spirit can intercede through us through the speaking of tongues.

3. Self-Edification

1 Corinthians 14:4 tells us, "The one who speaks in a tongue builds up himself, but the one who prophesies builds up the church."

I am a firm believer that the gift of tongues has its place, and the best place to always practice it is in private. When we are most distraught, the Holy Spirit gives us joy and peace and the way He manifests is through tongues.

4. Affirmation of Faith

Sometimes, it just works best to have proof, and that's what tongues are: They are proof that God indeed comes to strengthen us in faith and in conduct. In Mark 16:17, Jesus declared "And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues."

As the wonders of spiritual gifts move, we are assured of the move and presence of God in our life.
