Why You Aren't an Accident Even If Your Parents Didn't Plan You

"Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations." — Jeremiah 1:5

We probably all have that one friend, co-worker, or church mate who has felt the weight of being a result of an unplanned pregnancy. They might say things like "My parents never planned me" or "I'm an accident that should have never happened."

But God's Word in Jeremiah assures us that there is no such thing as an accident of a person.

Things may never be in our plans, but God has plans even when we do not. What we might think of as a random experience could actually be God's prelude to a miracle in disguise. If God can use unplanned situations, He can definitely use unplanned people.

Whether you were born out of wedlock or came in a time where your parents were not intending to have kids, God had you in mind and already worked out even millions of years ago how perfectly you were going to fit into this world and into His great purposes.

I don't know if Jeremiah was a product of an unplanned pregnancy himself, but he sure had his doubts. And yet in those doubts God assured him that even in his young age, dire circumstances and troubled nation, God would used him to bless multiple nations in one lifetime.

Romans 8:28 is one of my all-time favourite verses. It says, "And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose."

All things God works together. Not all things are planned and not all people are planned, but God has in mind a way to make us all fit into the storyline, and he doesn't want you to just be a filler or an extra. He wants you to be a main supporting character to His story.

You are no accident. The way you were intricately, fearfully and wonderfully made attests to that. If you were an accident, you'd have to be the most deliberately designed accident to have ever walked on this earth. But you are not. You're God's image on earth meant to do wonderful things for God and for others. You are to be a blessing and not a burden. You are God's instrument, vessel and channel of goodwill and glory to this earth.

God never makes mistakes and He made you. More importantly, He paid the ultimate price to redeem you of your sin—the blood of His own son Jesus Christ. That's how valuable He sees you because He knows your life is worth saving and it's worth using for His glory and honour.
