Construction has begun on new state-of-the-art buildings for Oasis Academy Immingham, which opens this September to replace Immingham School.

The academy, sponsored by Oasis Community Learning, will open in existing buildings and high-specification temporary accommodation, as the new buildings are constructed.

Steve Chalke MBE, CEO of Oasis Community Learning, said, "The new buildings that we are planning for Immingham will house state-of-the-art facilities. But any and every successful school is about far more than a new building. The excellent staff have worked hard to deliver so much improvement in recent years."

The start of construction work will be marked by a groundbreaking ceremony on Wednesday 27 June. Oasis Trust founder Steve Chalke and students from the new Academy will drive the first spades into the ground on the spot where the secondary school and community facilities will be built.

Roger Edwardson, Deputy Director for Learning and Childcare of North East Lincolnshire Council said Oasis Academy Immingham would bring huge benefits to the area.

"We believe Oasis will add diversity and a range of new opportunities that improve the life chances of young people and bring about the step change we are seeking in standards here in Immingham," he said.

Construction of the Oasis Academy is due for completion by 2009.

Brian Dixon was announced as the Principal Designate of Oasis Academy Immingham last November. He said: "I am excited by the start of this construction work as it marks the beginning of lots of new and exciting opportunities for the whole community in Immingham."
