Many were surprised about Ultimate Fighting Champion (UFC) superstar Conor McGregor's harsh words towards World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), but not former WWE star CM Punk, who was more surprised with how the roster reacted.

Speaking to Peter Rosenberg for Hot 97, Punk, who is making his debut in the UFC next month, said that WWE "got worked" and that "they should have known better."

Punk said that WWE superstars responding to McGregor's taunts did not do them good. By doing so, the debuting UFC star believes that they gave the Irishman the attention he wanted.

"It's embarrassing fighting with anyone on Twitter," Punk said. "You can fight with the idiots on Twitter but from the outsiders perspective somebody looking at that can't tell the different between who the idiot is so don't respond," he went on to say.

Superstars both current and former such as Ric Flair, Roman Reigns, Kurt Angle and MVP responded to McGregor, who called WWE stars "dweebs" and "messed up p------."

He followed it up on Twitter saying "I didn't mean no disrespect to the WWE fans. What I meant to say was that I'd slap the head off your entire roster. And twice on Sunday's," starting the Twitter war.

Punk said that what McGregor said was not entirely false. "You have to be tough to be in wrestling but do you have to be tough to be in that locker room? Not anymore," Punk pointed out.

"It's a different world and a different business not only from when I started but from when I was there," he continued.

Punk left WWE in 2014 reportedly on bad terms, as he reportedly did not get what he deserved in terms of a boost and pay after working hard for the company. He also dealt with MRSA infection.

Punk has expressed no desire to return to WWE and is working on building a career in UFC. After sustaining two injuries delaying his UFC debut, Punk will finally step into the octagon against Mickey Gall at the UFC 203 on Sept. 10.
