After following the pair's ever-changing dynamics during the entire regular run of "The X-Files" from 1993 to 2002, fans are eager to find out how Mulder (David Duchovny) and Scully (Gillian Anderson) are going to work with each other again, now as ex-lovers, when the iconic sci-fi series returns for a special run on FOX next year.

E! News revealed that the former FBI special agents will no longer be a couple when "The X-Files miniseries" premieres in January. The couple was last seen together in "The X-Files: I Want To Believe" movie in 2008. But after seven years, the romance between the two seemed to have died down.

A trailer that was exclusively showcased at FOX's panel during the Television Critics Association's 2015 summer press tour confirmed the split, where Scully referred to herself as Mulder's "friend and physician." The Entertainment Weekly also talked to a source who has connections with the network, and confirmed that the paranormal investigators are no longer together.

This could disappoint the fans of the couple, who have been with them since they started working as partners in the FBI until they became friends and eventually, lovers. While the network did not reveal the reason why Mulder and Scully broke up, it is safe to assume that the couple had a falling out after they were forced to give up their son William for his protection.

However, E! News says that it would be interesting to see the new dynamics between these characters since it will be the first time for them to work together as ex-lovers in the series.

Meanwhile, another major character agreed to reprise her role in the revival of the highly popular supernatural sci-fi thriller. Annabeth Gish, the actress who portrayed the role of special agent Monica Reyes, recently signed up to return in one of the episodes in the miniseries. She was first introduced in "The X-Files" season 8 as John Doggett's (Robert Patrick) partner and eventually took over Scully's post in the bureau when she left the FBI.

The six-episode "The X-Files special mini-series" will open with the first half of a two-part premiere episode on Sunday, Jan. 24, 2016, while the second part will be aired the following day.
