'X-Men: Apocalypse' plot: Movie marks the franchise going 'cosmic'

"X-Men" producer-screenwriter Simon Kinberg recently spoke with MTV News and revealed that the upcoming "X-Men: Apocalypse" would alter the tone of the franchise. There was a tonal shift from "X-Men: First Class" to "X-Men: Days of Future Past," but it appears that "X-Men: Apocalypse" will greatly affect the tone of future films as well.

Kinberg explained that "Days of Future Past" brought the franchise closer to a science fiction setting than previous "X-Men" films had before, particularly with the time traveling element of the movie. This new tone will be further pushed in the next film.

"We felt like the movies were ready for something that was slightly more, let's say, cosmic," Kinberg explained. "Once we made the decision for Apocalypse to be the villain at the center of the movie, we wanted to be true to the comics, which are sort of, like you, say, not costume, but it's not just a guy in a helmet. It is more cosmic."

According to a report from Cinema Blend, the constant use of the word "cosmic" will also apply to the villain En Sabah Nur aka Apocalypse (Oscar Isaac), hinting that the film will stay true to the source material and show Apocalypse gaining alien technology during his early days as a mutant living in Ancient Egypt.

This change is in line with the newest trend in comic book movies. Very few superheroes still function primarily in just one location, mostly those on TV such as Netflix's "Daredevil" and CW's "Arrow." This may change with the upcoming CBS series "Supergirl."

Marvel started introducing cosmic elements with "Thor" and eventually went full-on science fiction with "Guardians of the Galaxy." DC and Warner Bros. started with a cosmic element with "Man of Steel," and Fox attempted a cosmic/ sci-fi blend with the latest "Fantastic Four" film.

"X-Men: Apocalypse" opens in theaters on May 27, 2016.
