Xiaomi Mi 5, Redmi Note 2 specs, release rumors: Images leak online

Fans of China-based phone manufacturer Xiaomi have been waiting for the successor to its current flagships, the Mi 4 and Redmi Note. Now, it looks like recent leaks are a sort of confirmation that a new lineup of devices, the next-gen Mi 5 and Redmi Note 2, will be released soon.

In the latest rounds of speculations, what observers say is the official look of the Mi 5 has been leaked early this month. First spotted on technology blog GizmoChina, the image supposedly shows the rumored Xiaomi Mi 5's back panel. Aside from the design, the image also showcases the upcoming smartphone's dual-camera setup at the back together with dual-LED flash, on an all-glass back finish.

According to Xiaomi observers, if the image indeed shows the back panel of the upcoming Mi 5, it debunks earlier suppositions that the company's next flagship will be coming with a fingerprint sensor.

Meanwhile, in terms of specs, there were reports in China's Weibo posts that the new Xiaomi flagship will sport a 5.2-inch QHD LCD screen, able to display 1440 x 2560 pixel resolution, and will be covered in Corning Gorilla Glass 4. Under the hood, the Mi 5 is speculated to be powered by a Snapdragon 810 processor. Although there is no confirmation on how much RAM the Mi 5 will come with, observers say that in order to keep up with the competition, a 3 GB value should be the minimum. In addition, the smartphone will have a 16-megapixel rear camera alongside a large 13-megapixel sensor on the front.

Aside from the Mi 5, Xiaomi is also reportedly working on the next Redmi Note, which will come with a 5.5-inch full-HD display, 4G LTE connectivity, and a high-capacity battery that is larger than 3000 mAh. Under the hood, the Redmi Note 2 will reportedly have either a Snapdragon 410 processor or Mediatek's Helio X10 chipset.
