Xiaomi has just released its newest flagship, the Mi Note 2. However, an update is said to be already in the pipeline as the new flagship is rumored to receive an Android Nougat 7.1 update soon.

However, it may not be the stock ROM that users are thinking of. According to GizmoChina, Xiaomi is hard at work developing an update to its own MiUI platform, and the upcoming version, the MiUI 9, is supposedly based on Android Nougat 7.1. It is not yet confirmed when Xiaomi plans to release the new platform, although there may already be a beta version of MiUI 9 that is currently being tested among a number of select participants.

Supposedly, the upcoming MiUI 9 is being tailor-fitted to the Xiaomi Mi Note 2. One of the alleged new improvements over the current MiUI 8 interface is that the upcoming platform adds special "Smart Edge Gesture" support. This new control option is particularly useful to the Mi Note 2 since the flagship features a dual-edged, curved display. The new control interface is expected to work like the gesture control for another dual-edged flagship, the Samsung Galaxy S7 edge.

Meanwhile, it is already expected that when the MiUI 9 rolls out, the first iteration that will receive the update is the Mi Note 2. Much like other tech makers, Xiaomi rolls out its major platform updates to recent flagship releases first, working down on the list towards previous-generation lineups.

Aside from the Mi Note 2, the concept flagship Mi MIX is also expected to get the update. In addition, most 2016 releases by the tech maker are likely included in the update list, like the Mi 5s and Mi 5 lineups, the newly-launched Redmi 4, as well as the Redmi Note 4. However, it is unclear which of the previous-generation iterations will be included in the Android Nougat-based update.
