Xiaomi Mi5 vs Xperia X Performance: How do the 2 new premium handsets fare against each other?

Two of the latest phones for this year are the Xiaomi Mi5 and the Sony Xperia X Performance. Both were unveiled at the recently concluded Mobile World Congress 2016. They have a similar chip, screen resolution and camera. So, which one will have the bigger slice of the market?

Size, display and body

The Xiaomi Mi5 offers a 5.15-inch screen that gives 428 ppi pixel resolution. The company is claiming that its screen has a resistance of up to 8H on the Mohs hardness scale. The device weighs 129 grams and comes in a ceramic body with a curved edge design that gives out a smooth change, from glass to metal. There are four colors to choose from: black, gold, white and ceramic.

The Sony Xperia X Performance, on the other hand, offers a slightly smaller screen, 5 inches to be exact, but gives a 441 ppi pixel density display. It has a scratch-resistant glass and oleophobic coating. It also comes with TRILUMINOS and X-Reality technology, which greatly enhances its display features. The colors options are white, graphite black, lime gold and rose gold.

Chip, memory and storage

The two latest smartphones come equipped with Qualcomm's Snapdragon 820 (MS8996), dual-core 2.15 GHz Kryo and dual-core 1.6 GHz Kryo, and with an Adreno 530 for the GPU.

The Mi5 comes with a 4GB RAM and 128GB internal storage for the Pro edition, while the basic houses a 3GB RAM and 32GB or 64GB internal storage.

On the other hand, the X Performance has 3 GB of RAM, 32 GB of internal storage, and can support up to 2 TB on its microSD slot.

Camera and battery

The Xiaomi Mi5 offers a 16MP main camera that comes with 4-axis OIS, dual-LED (dual tone) flash, f/2.0, and phase detection autofocus. It also features geo-tagging, touch focus, face and smile detection, HDR and a panorama setting. Moreover, it can take videos on 2160p@30fps, 1080p@30fps, 720p@120fps. The 4MP front camera can take videos at 1080p@30fps. The battery is a Li-Po 3,000 mAh non-removable type.

The Sony X Performance is loaded with a 23MP main camera with LED flash f/2.0, and also features face detection autofocus, geo-tagging, touch focus, face detection, HDR and panorama. It can take 1080p@30fps videos. The front camera is 13MP with a 1/3" sensor and offers f/2.0, 1080p videos. However, it comes with a smaller Li-Ion battery at 2,700 mAh, and is also non-removable.

The Xiaomi Mi5 is expected to be released around March and might be released internationally. The Sony Xperia X Performance will be available in Asia, but no news yet if it will be made available in other parts of the world.
