Android N news 2016: Features revealed; platform to be unveiled at Google I/O event

The upcoming Android N matters a lot in the mobile operating system community. Much information has already been confirmed – multi-window mode and better tablet support – but there are still rumors such as stylus support and Chrome OS integration. However, it seems that the most important question in the Android community is, what does N stand for?

Android Authority reported that the multi-window mode or split screen, introduced in the Marshmallow version, will be better – better integration for the tablet and not just a blown-up version. The new Android version is now coded using OpenJDK instead of Java APIs, following the not-so-friendly encounter with Oracle.

It was also exclusively reported by Android Police that the Android N will feature some changes in the cosmetics of its notifications. There are additional settings to tweak for better user experience.

The Android N is also said to be VR-ready. It was rumored earlier that Google is set to produce its own VR headgear, which may also coincide with the Android N's launching.

A new messaging app is also expected, plus the return of the Dark Theme, better security features, better battery utilization, and app stability.

And of course, as part of Android's "tradition," there are several rumors on what the letter "N" stands for – a dessert that starts with that letter – Nutella tops the list, Nougat follows closely. There is also a chance that it may be an Indian dessert since Sundar Pichai, the company's CEO, quipped during a chit-chat with students in Delhi University back in December that he will also ask his mother for a suggestions.

The new Android operating system is slated to be revealed on the first day of Google's I/O event this year. The event is set to happen from May 18 to 20 at the Shoreline Amphitheatre, Mountain View, California, near Google's headquarters, as Pichai announced last Jan. 13. The roll-out of the new OS may happen by the end of October or early November, with the launch of new Nexus devices.

The Google I/O event is still almost two months away, and many changes can still happen with the upcoming Android N.
