Archbishop of York challenges young people to reflect on Christmas story

The Archbishop of York is encouraging young people to reflect on the real meaning of Christmas with the help of new resources.

The free online resources have been developed by the Archbishop of York's Youth Trust and explore the practical ways in which the gifts of hope, peace, joy and love can be shared with others.

The resources are rolling out between now and Christmas under the title of 'Advent Unwrapped' and will take on a different theme each week.

They include a Bible passage, suggestions for practical action and prayers, and can be used in a classroom setting or as part of collective worship.

Young people are encouraged to share how they are taking part by posting their stories at @ABYyouthtrust

The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu said: 'I love Advent – it is a wonderful season of watching and waiting. The Christmas Story is the greatest story ever told and it is one to stir the soul and lift our spirits. Each week the Youth Trust's resources will unwrap something from the Christmas story to help us prepare for the coming of Jesus into the world.'

Naburn Church of England Primary School is just one of many schools across the country that has signed up to take part in Advent Unwrapped.

Headteacher Brenda Christison praised the resources for being full of new ideas and practical ways to help others.

In addition to using the resources in its collective worship, the school will be sending some of the ideas out to parents to do along with their children.

'I particularly like the reflective side to this resource and this aspect fits perfectly with our whole school focus on mindfulness. This is especially relevant at this busy time of year,' she said.
