"Better Call Saul" season 3 is widely speculated to feature Gustavo Fring (Giancarlo Esposito), a notorious villain from "Breaking Bad," and it is now hinted that during this period in the show, he has just started his drug empire, and he will be hiring Jimmy McGill, also known as Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk), to be his lawyer.
Given that "Better Call Saul" is a prequel to "Breaking Bad," it is possible that the show will reveal how Gus and Saul knew each other. According to Master Herald, it is possible that Gus is still beginning to open his trade in New Mexico and that he needs a lawyer to protect him on the legal side, and this is how they will get acquainted.
Saul has been shown to get attention in the first two seasons after he exposed a couple trying to run away with millions of dollars and after he exposed a large-scale scam involving retirement homes. Given how Saul is also willing to lie, cheat, and steal to win, he is the best candidate to represent Gus Fring.
During the time setting of "Better Call Saul," Mike Ehrmantraut (Jonathan Banks) was working as a security guard on gate duty. However, in "Breaking Bad," he was working directly under Fring, indicating that season 3 will also explore how he got hired by Fring to be the new head of security.
Mike had already been involved in several cases in the past, from the time he killed the corrupt police who murdered his son to the trouble he got involved in with Saul, further improving his reputation as a perfect gun for hire for Fring. Given how Saul will meet Fring first, it is also possible that he will be the one to introduce Mike to Fring.
This will ensure that, even with Fring present, the focus will still be on Saul and Mike, as hinted by co-creator Peter Gould a few months back in a report by Entertainment Weekly.
"Right now, this is a guy - I'm talking about Gus Fring - who often works very indirectly. This is not somebody who is not easy to access. On 'Breaking Bad' at times he was a little bit like the man behind the curtain, like the 'Wizard of Oz,' not so easy to get to see. So, none of this is to say that suddenly you're going to be seeing an awful lot of that character once we come back," he explained at the time.
"Better Call Saul" season 3 is set to premiere in 2017.
