'Big Little Lies' season 2 news, release date: Author open to possibility of season 2

HBO's dark comedy-drama "Big Little Lies" might see a second season. Author Liane Moriarty believes the network is interested in picking up the adaptation for a new season, and she also admits she is open to the possibility.

According to Moriarty, she has been pondering on several possible ways for the show to progress. In an interview with the Morning Herald, the novelist admitted that she wants to create a sequel that will not be in novel form. The sequel will most likely be written specifically for the TV adaptation.

"I'm absolutely open to it because, once I started thinking, it was too much fun to see what I could do and to see these characters again," she said.

The author admitted that she wanted to see more of Bonnie's (Zoe Kravitz) backstory in the pilot season, particularly the one involving domestic abuse, where her urge to kill Perry (Alexander Skarsgard) stems from. Hence, season 2 subplots might revolve around Bonnie. Another character Moriarty wants to highlight in the succeeding season is Celeste (Nicole Kidman).

Series director Jean-Marc Vallee has an explanation for excluding Bonnie's backstory in the first season. The director said that they originally had a line, which was supposed to be uttered by the detective, explaining the facts of Bonnie's backstory. However, there was too much explaining involved that they eventually decided to cut it out from the script.

"Whether or not she has been abused, she is going to push this motherf—er," Vallee said before adding, "And then the smallest guy pushes him, not to kill him, but the accident happens. To give it a reason and justify that because she was abused and had a thing against men, it's not about that."

The HBO mini-series was initially intended to be a film adaptation of Moriarty's novels of the same name. The network has yet to confirm the renewal of "Big Little Lies" for a new season.

More updates on the second season of "Big Little Lies" should arrive in the weeks to come.
