'Borderlands 3' release date, latest news: Developers to make an announcement on Dec. 1

Gearbox Software said that they are going to work on "Borderlands 3" back in April during PAX East, but they never gave fans a proper release date. However, the developers may be announcing the project during the upcoming Game Awards on Dec. 1.

Chief executive Randy Pitchford responded to a fan question on Twitter who asked for a crossover between "Duke Nukem" and "Gears of War." Pitchford replied, stating they were going to make an announcement on Dec. 1, and it would be something that would cater to the fan's request.

In January 2015 Gearbox confirmed that "Borderlands 3" would be the biggest title in the franchise. It was also stated at the time that it would be developed specifically for the PS4 and Xbox One, with a PC port likely to be released as well. The game may also take full advantages of the PS4 Pro and the Xbox Project Scorpio.

Gamespot reports that Pitchford's statement only confirms they are making a big announcement during the Game Awards, but it does not explicitly say it will be about "Borderlands 3," meaning it could be about a new "Duke Nukem" game or even a brand new IP.

When the company acquired the rights to the "Duke Nukem" franchise, they were first obligated to finish and release "Duke Nukem Forever," a game that was in development hell for a decade. The game, when released, was universally panned.

Pitchford reportedly responded to the criticism, stating that "Duke Nukem Forever" was merely a stepping stone that would allow them to further work on the franchise. If the company is not going to unveil "Borderlands 3" during the Game Awards, many fans speculate that it will be regarding a new "Duke Nukem" game.

The report also points out that there is a chance that the announcement will be for a new "Brothers in Arms" game or a brand new IP.
