Floyd Mayweather will look to tie Rocky Marciano's iconic 49–0 record on Sept. 12 as he already selected an opponent for most likely the final fight of his career and it will be Andre Berto.
Mayweather (48–0, 26 KOs) is coming off a unanimous decision win over pound-for-pound rival Manny Pacquiao last May 2 in the richest boxing fight in history.
After making his announcement that he will be stepping in the ring for the last time this September, top contenders like Amir Khan, Pacquiao (rematch), Kell Brook, Keith Thurman, and Shawn Porter were linked to a possible bout against the unbeaten champion but it was Berto who was chosen.
"I'm ready to get back in the ring on Sept. 12 and prove again to the whole world why I'm the best ever. I always bring my A-game, and this fight against Andre Berto is no exception," Mayweather said according to ESPN.
The 38-year-old boxing superstar added that Berto is a young slugger who is hungry to face the best but he will be no different to the 48 men who tried to defeat him and will be the 49th.
Meanwhile, Berto (30–3, 23 KOs) is currently riding a two-fight winning streak but he is 3–3 in his last six fights.
Despite the odds stacked against him, the 31-year-old boxer is promising a knockout against Mayweather.
"I'm coming to kick Floyd's ass on Sept. 12. Best believe that I plan to bring it to Floyd and I'm not concerned about what 48 other fighters have been unable to do," Berto said. "Somebody is getting knocked out, and it won't be me. You don't want to miss this," he added.
The fight will take place at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas and is the final fight under Mayweather's contract with Showtime/CBS which was signed in 2013.
A press conference was held in Los Angeles last Aug. 6 to officially announce the September fight between Mayweather and Berto.
