Canelo Alvarez next fight news: Floyd Mayweather Jr. tells Mexican to shun Gennady Golovkin

Saúl "Canelo" Alvarez plans against Gennady Golovkin remain under wraps, with the camps of the two boxers reportedly still talking on how to make the fight happen.

Both have been allowed to face opponents of their choice, an allowance of sorts before the two finally face in the World Boxing Council's mandatory fight for the middleweight title.

It is believed that the two would likely face off by the latter part of 2016. But still on the table is Alvarez' demand for a 155-pound catch weight, which Golovkin and the WBC are not likely to recognize.

And that has, apparently, become a concern, possibly shunning the mega bout that everyone wants to see.

Alvarez is getting some backing as well. Floyd Mayweather Jr. recently spoke via Fighthype.com, technically advising him to forego Golovkin at least for now.

Even though the retired and undefeated boxer did not stress when Alvarez should face Golovkin, such is likely to draw violent criticism from those who are not exactly impressed at how Mayweather railroaded his career.

Mayweather was often hit for avoiding big name fighters. But throughout his career, he did face the greatest and the only thing that anyone could criticize is perhaps the timing.

One such fight is the one involving Manny Pacquiao, someone he chose to face after several years. That happened, of course, in May of this year, but many felt that Pacquiao was no longer at the peak of form by that time.

Could this be the same case for Alvarez?

The thing is, Alvarez could end up losing the title if he opts to forego Golovkin. Such a move will likely not sit well with the boxing pundits, although Alvarez may want to take into consideration Mayweather's concern — his well-being.

Alvarez and company do believe that the Mexican brawler is not yet ready to fight at 160 pounds and face the Kazakh knockout artist. If so, the question now is when will Alvarez be ready for that.
