Vintage gaming consoles are a thing now. Joining the trend, Retro Games is launching another classic gaming console in the form of the Commodore 64 Mini. The company has joined the ranks of Nintendo who launched its own throwback gaming consoles: the NES Classic and SNES Classic.
Introduced in 1982, the Commodore 64 became the highest-selling single computer model of all time, selling an estimated 10 to 17 million units. Part of its success at the time of its release can be attributed to the Commodore being marketed to regular retailers instead of being limited to computer stores.
The Commodore 64 or C64 Mini still retains its original aesthetic but is now 50 percent smaller. Its iconic keyboard is still part of the design, but for people who want to use a bigger keyboard, they can plug in a USB keyboard.
The joystick is also included along with a USB port to plug in a second joystick for those wanting to have multiplayer gaming. Aside from the Commodore 64 Mini, Retro Games has also lined up a modern version of the C64 slated to be released in late 2018.
Aside from the classic and upgraded hardware, Retro Games included 64 vintage games in the C64 Mini. Some of these titles are "California Games," "Speedball 2: Brutal Deluxe," "Paradroid" and "Impossible Mission."
In a statement released by the video console company, the majority of the games included have been "rated over 90 percent by leading publications of the day, with many winning coveted awards."
Video game observers noted that with the resurgence of Nintendo's NES Classic and SNES Classic, it is a smart move by Retro Games to get on the bandwagon while there is an upward trend on vintage video game consoles.
The Commodore 64 Mini will hit shelves in early 2018. It will have a retail price of $69.99.
