Dr. Reid (Matthew Gray Gubler) will finally get his much deserved spotlight in the upcoming season of CBS' long-running series "Criminal Minds."

Executive producer Erica Messer recently revealed to Entertainment Weekly that the dorky doctor would have "a very dramatic moment" in the premiere episode of season 11. Apparently, Reid would take the lead in a crucial takedown in what the executive producer promised to be "a rather disturbing scene."

"He gets to do a take down Reid style, which is just using his brain with a physical thing that's really disturbing — you have to turn away. It's not a standoff with a gun, it's a Reid version of a takedown," Messer said.

For the followers of the CBS series, the fact that the upcoming season would give Gubler's character more airtime came as no surprise. The actor has previously expressed his hopes that Reid would be shown in a different light. Luckily, the showrunners seemed to be on the same page with him, as aside from the said pivotal plot, he would also get a new team partner.

CBS has earlier revealed that a new character, Dr. Tara Lewis, a forensic psychologist, would be working closely with Dr. Reid in the Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU). Messner also hinted that she might just be his romantic interest.

In an interview with TV Guide back in season 10, the executive producer revealed that the writers might think of something to make Reid's life more colorful, at least on the romance aspect. She said that the show was aware of the fans' positive reactions to his attempt at flirting with a guest character last season.

"It's been two years. Maeve is something that will never go away in his heart. We want him to smile again and we think everybody else does too," she said.

"Criminal Minds" season 11 will premiere on Sept. 23 on CBS.
