Fans of the "Digimon" franchise will have to bear another end. Debuting in November 2015, "Digimon Adventure tri." will bid its fans goodbye with its sixth and final film slated to come out next year. A release date and theatrical poster for the upcoming film was released last weekend.
Toei Animation announced that "Digimon Adventure tri." would come out with its sixth installment next summer. The news spread as the most recent "Digimon" movie began its three-week theatrical run in Japan, with the fifth movie ending with the teaser for the next installment.
"Digimon Adventure tri. Part 6 – Our Future" is reported to come to theaters at the start of next summer, but little has been released about the sixth movie as of press time
The subtitle for the sixth "Digimon" film has also got the fans buzzing. Each of the last "Digimon Adventure tri." films had only one word as its subtitle. The first film had "Reunion" followed by "Determination," "Confession" and "Loss." "Coexistence is the fifth film in the anthology, thus "Our Future" breaks the existing trend.
The film anthology follows the story of the original eight DigiDestined kids three years after the events in "Digimon Adventure 02." The kids have grown up and just started high school. The DigiDestined have drifted apart but the group is brought back together when the real world starts to blend with the Digital World.
According to the official synopsis, "It's been six years since that summer adventure when Tai (now in high school) and the rest of the 'DigiDestined' crossed over to the Digital World, and nearly three years since the frenzied final battles between warring factions. With the gate to the Digital World closed, time continues to pass, until the adventure 'digivolves' once again."
The first five films have been received well by critics and fans alike. They praised the characters' development as well as the exploration of the complexities of adolescence coupled with the responsibility of saving the world.
The anthology has earned 650 million yen (about $5.7 million).
