"The Walking Dead" season 7 has just premiered with a bloody start, killing off two main characters immediately, but there is also the upcoming season 3 of "Fear the Walking Dead," which is currently in development. Showrunner Dave Erickson shares some details on what fans can expect when it premieres in 2017.
Speaking to the Hollywood Reporter, Erickson first confirmed that they intended to let Chris (Lorenzo James Henrie) die ever since they began working on season 2. By doing this, they could bring Chris' father, Travis (Cliff Curtis), to a new low and eventually break his sense of morality. This would be important to his character's development given that Travis has been the moral compass since the show began.
Erickson further explains that by killing Chris, they could further develop Travis into someone who has been fully engulfed by the zombie apocalypse. In season 3, one of the main themes will be about Travis evolving into someone who has accepted that the world has ended and that his old moral beliefs may no longer matter.
Fans will remember that this was also done to Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) in "The Walking Dead" when he had to kill his best friend, Shane (Jon Bernthal), in the season 2 finale and when he lost his wife in a later season. There was a time when Rick turned extremely violent, and his struggle with his own bloodlust is a recurring theme in the show.
Erickson also confirmed that the militant group revealed at the end of the season 2 finale will become one of the main focuses for season 3.
"There were a number of elements we wanted to start writing to," he explained. "One is the militia group we see. They're not regular army, but they will become a fixture in the next season. We'll discover some new characters in season three on the south side of the border as well," he went on to say.
"Fear the Walking Dead" season 3 is set to premiere in early 2017.
