It was previously reported that fans of "Frozen" are campaigning to convince Disney to give Princess Elsa (Idina Menzel) a girlfriend in the upcoming sequel, "Frozen 2." Voice actress Idina Menzel has now officially responded, speaking to ET Online during the recent Billboard Music Awards, revealing she supports the campaign.
"I think it's great. Disney's just gotta contend with that. I'll let them figure that out," the actress revealed. "No matter what, [Elsa] changed my life."
The Twitter campaign began with the hashtag #GiveElsaAGirlfriend has taken audiences worldwide. While there are many fans pushing for this to happen, several conservative groups have reportedly taken to their own campaign to stop this from happening and hope that Disney give Elsa a traditional male "Prince Charming" instead.
According to a report from Hollywood Life, the script for the film has already been written and production for the film has already begun so by this time Disney will have already decided whether or not Elsa will be lesbian or not. However, it's possible it could still change, as revealed by Menzel's co-star Kristen Bell, who voices Princess Anna.
Speaking to Collider back in March, Bell revealed that the script may be done but is still undergoing a few changes and tweaks. It is further speculated that changing Elsa's love interest into a female may be one of the tweaks and additions that the script is currently undergoing.
Disney has yet to confirm or deny if Princess Elsa is indeed going to be portrayed as a lesbian in "Frozen 2" and neither the script writers nor directors have given any hint. If Elsa's sexuality is altered she will be the first gay character in any Disney animated film.
"Frozen 2" does not have a release date as of the time of writing but it is scheduled to be released sometime in 2019.
