God's 'self-giving love'

A love that puts others first is at the heart of Easter, says the Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Wales.

Reverend Dafydd Andrew Jones said the conflict in Syria, tensions surrounding North Korea, and violent crime closer to home reflected the way in which mankind is sometimes "incapable of love" and instead motivated to act out of "selfishness".

By contrast, the Easter message was "simple and clear", he said.

"God is love: self-giving love ... But when we look at the reality that doesn't make the news, we are reminded that costly love is the dynamic of life," he said.

"Selfless love creates and sustains relationships of solidarity and participation. Its values go beyond the material, discovering the worth, value and dignity of each person."

He praised churches for continuing to act in love despite the tough economic climate. In the past year, PCW churches have raised over £230,000 for Christian Aid's work in Guatemala. Other churches are helping the needy in their own communities through services like foodbanks.

"How refreshing in an age of economic stringency and social change," said Reverend Jones.

"The Easter message is about being liberated by the transforming, self-giving love of Jesus. Because he is alive, he goes ahead of us, both in the daily common chores of life and in our big life-changing decisions. Let us celebrate with joy and hope."
