'Grand Theft Auto 6' release date: Game rumored to be pushed to 2019 to support VR technology

Grand Theft Auto V, current title in the franchise Rockstar Games

"Grand Theft Auto 6" continues to be one of the most highly anticipated sequels in the video game industry but neither Take-Two Interactive nor Rockstar Games has confirmed any details regarding the game. According to a report from Neurogadget, it is possible that the game is being delayed to further integrate VR technology into its features.

"Grand Theft Auto V," the current title in the franchise, initially launched as a third-person action game but when it was ported over to the PC, PS4 and Xbox One, the game was given a new first-person mode that further increased player immersion. It is speculated that VR technology could take this to the next step.

At the moment, virtual reality sets for video gaming are quite limited. However, the HTC Vive is set to launch this year and so is the PlayStation VR. According to the report, this new way of playing games could be integrated into "Grand Theft Auto 6" but in order to do so, the developers will need to wait for the VR sets to launch to the public.

It is highly likely that the developers already have a developer kit for the two aforementioned VR gear but it is very rare for a developer to integrate questionable tech into an established franchise like "Grand Theft Auto" without waiting to see how well this new product fares with the consumers.

The report does point out that YouTube user Joseph Delgado did present a mod for "GTA V" that allowed him to play it with VR headsets but this video was later taken down. While the video was up, it did cause some controversy as many fans claimed it turned a violent game for adults into what can be considered as a murder-simulator.

Unfortunately, the developers have not yet confirmed if this is indeed the case, which means the information should still be considered as a rumor until Take-Two and Rockstar Games make an official comment regarding the franchise and its use of VR technology.
